When you type &#8220;Help me with my presentation,&#8221; the model has to guess:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Is this a sales pitch or a team update?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Who&#8217;s the audience\u2014executives or peers?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What format do you want\u2014slides, a script, or bullet points?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How long should it be?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What tone should it use?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Every ambiguity is an invitation for the model to guess wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Five-Step_Pre-Prompt_Framework\"><\/span>The Five-Step Pre-Prompt Framework<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you ask an AI for help, answer five questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Define the goal.<\/strong> What are you trying to achieve? Not &#8220;create a presentation,&#8221; but &#8220;create a 10-slide presentation to persuade the board to approve a \u00a350,000 budget increase.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Define the role.<\/strong> What role should the AI play? A consultant? An editor? A copywriter? Setting the role shapes the output. &#8220;Act as a sceptical editor&#8221; produces different results than &#8220;Act as a supportive coach.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Define the audience.<\/strong> Who will read or hear this? Customers, colleagues, managers, or strangers? The audience determines tone, depth, and structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. Set the tone.<\/strong> Formal, conversational, technical, persuasive? Don&#8217;t assume the model will guess correctly. Tell it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5. Describe the output format.<\/strong> Bullet points, paragraphs, a numbered list, a table? Be specific. If you want three options, say so. Clear prompts invite precision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Worked_Example\"><\/span>Worked Example<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Original prompt:<\/strong> &#8220;Write a blog post about productivity.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>After applying the framework:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Goal:<\/strong> Create a 600-word blog post that helps freelancers manage their time without productivity tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Role:<\/strong> Act as a pragmatic productivity consultant who avoids buzzwords.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Audience:<\/strong> Freelancers aged 25\u201340 who are sceptical of productivity hype.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tone:<\/strong> Conversational, direct, no corporate waffle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Output:<\/strong> Three sections\u2014morning routines, managing distractions, and knowing when to stop. Each section 200 words. Use subheadings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The difference is night and day. The original prompt could produce anything.
